Circle of Learning

Ever notice how you feel when around talented people? Do you feel ignorant, or incompetent?

We talk all the time about how everyone starts at the same place to learn something…just at different times! The Master you admire was a beginner at one time.

  1. Step One: You haven’t met that “master” or even know what it is he has mastered. You would have seen the end results of “whatever”, but not given it much thought. You are Unaware that you have the Inability. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW!

  2. Step Two: Something piqued your curiosity about the “whatever”, and don’t have the first clue how to find out the “how” of it. YOU HAVE THE DESIRE, BUT DON’T KNOW HOW!

  3. Step Three: You are conscious of the “whatever”, and have found out the “how”, and now are in the practice stage…the stage most of us want to ignore. Pianists and other muscians don’t just sit down and start to play classical music. Unless you are Mozart. Artists don’t sit down at a canvas and paint Mona Lisa for their first painting. Chefs don’t know how to speed chop onions by hand until they have cut many pounds of them. EVERYTHING has a learning curve = practice.YOU UNDERSTAND HOW AND NEED TO FOCUS. I had several tutors tell me that I had absorbed all their knowledge but needed to go to my studio alone and practice it.

  4. Step Four: At this stage, your monkey brain doesn’t thnk about “how”. You KNOW what to do because all the practice has created mind/hand memory. You can listen to a book on tape and paint with total abandon…or chop onions without cutting a finger!
